‘I screamed a little bit!’: Portsmouth woman wins $3 million

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A Portsmouth woman who bought a Mega Millions ticket back in January didn’t realize she’d won a $3 million prize for weeks.

Melena Hill bought the ticket back on Jan. 9 at Murphy USA at 6261 College Drive in Suffolk. The winning numbers were 12-15-32-33-53, with a Mega Ball number of 24.

However, the ticket sat in Hill’s nightstand for more than five weeks after the drawing, according to a release from the Virginia Lottery.

When she finally realized she won, she said, “My stomach had butterflies. I screamed a little bit!” Hill said.

Hill only missed the Mega Ball number, which would usually win you $1 million. But she paid an additional dollar with her ticket for a “Megaplier” and tripled the prize.
