PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is helping students gear up for the school year with two upcoming Student Freedom Pass sign-up events.

Student Freedom Passes give riders age 13 to 17 in Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach unlimited access to free rides on buses, ferries and light rail service.

The dates times and locations for the two events are listed below:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at Hampton High School, 1491 W. Queen St. in Hampton.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 4-7 p.m. at Hampton Roads Transit, 509 E. 18th St. in Norfolk.  Parking is available for visitors on Armistead Avenue, directly across from Chick-Fil-A.

“The Student Freedom Pass from HRT is a great way to introduce teens to transit, educate them on how to get around, and provide them with safe and efficient transportation throughout the school year,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO.

Those unable to attend one of the events in-person can get a Student Freedom Pass by filling out the application and visiting one of our transit centers in Norfolk, Hampton and Newport News.
