HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Armed incidents continue to spread throughout the Commonwealth, prompting local organizations to join forces and work together to end the senseless shootings.
This Saturday, the second-annual 1911 Bowl is expected to attract more than 2,000 people to Hampton as the city takes action to reduce crime in the community.
The Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities are bringing young people to the gridiron for a day of fun, free of gun violence.
“We realize in Hampton sports is huge for the community,” said Keyanna Young, Operation Ceasefire program coordinator. “We have a lot of NFL players who come from this area, and the kids look up to them. We thought it was a great idea to bring youth from all over the 757 to watch them play and potentially be involved and provide resources to the community.”
For this generation, seeing is believing. Young said allowing the kids to step foot on a college campus will help them to envision what their lives could be like down the road.
“Don’t allow your environment to ruin your future,” Young said. “We face the gun violence. We face violent crime. But don’t allow that to change the trajectory of your life. We want them to understand that we can support you. You will have support even if you don’t come from a family that you think could afford to go to this university.”
By partnering with the Tidewater Dawgs and Kappa Cardinals of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., those who come out can check out multiple football games, along with family activities for everyone to enjoy.
“The game will have free ice cream while supplies last, and food trucks onsite for purchase,” she said. “We have something exciting this year. We have a T-shirt cannon where we can shoot up T-shirts to the crowd. We’ll have a DJ and bounce houses.”
Violent crime in the city of Hampton is down by 74%, and it hopes with community events like the 1911 Bowl, they will see a further decline in that number.
The 1911 Bowl runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Armstrong Stadium (200 William R. Harvey Way in Hampton. The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
