State Police investigating two interstate shootings in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Police responded to separate shooting incidents on the interstate in Hampton Monday night.

According to State Police, its communications center was first contacted around 7:45 p.m. about a possible shooting on I-64 eastbound just west of Settlers Landing. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called out to investigate. A male victim who was in a white 2015 Hyundai Sonata was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Just after 10 p.m., troopers responded to a separate shooting incident on Interstate 664 southbound, in which the victim exited I-64 at Power Plant Parkway in Hampton. The victim in this case was driving a gray 2005 Toyota Camry. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said an investigation is ongoing in both cases.

“Anyone that has or has witnessed any suspicious activities prior to, or after the shootings, or who may have witnessed the shootings while traveling on the interstate, are asked to contact State Police,” Anaya said. “We will take any information. A lot of people believe they don’t have information, or they may have seen a car, but we are asking the community to call with any information that they have.”

Around 6:25 p.m. June 1, three cars crashed on I-64 near Neil Armstrong Parkway, according to State Police, who confirmed there was a shooting and another car was rear ended. Two men were hurt, one in the shooting another in the crash.

Whalan McDew, president of the Do Gooders of Hampton Roads, calls the recent trend disturbing.

“No one seems to know how to resolve issues that they are having without pulling a gun,” McDew said. “They tend to forget or don’t care that what they do has consequences for everyone other than them. Can you imagine going down the interstate and a bullet comes through your window? Or you hear a bullet? Or see someone get shot? That is traumatizing. These are the effects that people aren’t thinking about. What they do impacts people around them.”

McDew said the community must lead by example for the next generation.

“If this is what you’re showing, then this is what these young people will do,” said McDew. “We have to show them another way.”
