HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY)– A double shooting at a Hampton 7-Eleven has left one man dead and another fighting for his life at a local hospital.
Police say the shooting happened around 2:28 a.m. Sunday at a 7-Eleven in the 4900 block of W. Mercury Blvd.
When officers arrived, they found a man dead on the scene from a gunshot wound and a large disorderly crowd, according to a news release from Hampton Police.
During the investigation at the 7-Eleven, a second man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound showed up at Sentara Careplex.
Police say both victims were part a large crowd that had gathered at the 7-Eleven parking lot. The suspect approached the crowd with a gun and shot the two victims. The suspect ran from the scene after the shooting.
Sunday evening, police identified 27-year-old Jahleel Angus as the man who died in the fatal shooting. Officials say the other victim, a 29-year-old Newport News man, remains hospitalized in stable condition.
A neighbor who declined to be on camera told 10 On Your Side it’s not uncommon for large crowds to be at the gas station, but this situation is very different.
“Usually, the 7-11 will be full and then the bank on the corner will just have a couple cars, but this time it was way more than it was previously. Down our street, there were cars and it’s never been like that bad,” she said.
She recalled the moment she heard the gunshots, calling it scary.
“And then we hear three gunshots, three or four roughly.”
She described what she calls odd behavior she saw after the shots went off.
“It was weird how everyone was leaving. It wasn’t like they were running. It was just very slow.”
She said while this isn’t normal for her neighborhood, the shooting highlights a problem she wants the city to help fix.
“There’s definitely families down here that I think – I know are going to get annoyed waking up at 2:30in the morning to loud music that goes on for about an hour at least every weekend.”
Police are investigating the motive and circumstances of the shooting, but say it does not appear to be a random act.
