HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man died after a shooting in Hampton late Saturday morning and another man was taken into custody and charged with murder.

Police say the call for the shooting came in around 11:50 a.m. in the 400 block of Highland Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a 34-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival. He was identified as 34-year-old Vondre Hobley, of Hampton.

After a preliminary investigation, police say a verbal altercation turned violent and resulted in shots fired. All people involved in the incident remained at the scene, police said.

Police announced on Sept. 6 that 22-year-old Christian Hill, of Newport News, was taken into custody on Sept. 4 and later charged with murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Police haven’t shared additional details but said Hill was taken to Hampton City Jail.
