HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was convicted in a Hampton shooting that left a teenage girl injured will serve 13 years in prison.

Dontrel Whitaker was convicted in January on charges of  malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, discharging a firearm in public and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Court records show he was sentenced on May 1 to 33 years in prison with 20 years suspended — leaving 13 to serve. Whitaker will face 20 years of supervised probation following his time served.

Whitaker’s arrest came after Hampton Police responded to a shooting at E. Pembroke Ave and Shelton Road in July 2018. Responding officers found a 16-year-old girl shot at the scene, police said.

Police said the teen was walking with a friend when her friend got into an argument with someone, who pulled out a gun during the dispute and fired it — hitting the 16-year-old.

The teen’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.
