HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A long-term traffic shift along I-64 is expected to start as early as Sunday evening, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
VDOT encourages motorists to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work zones.
“The most important thing when driving through a construction zone is to follow that speed limit,” said Holly Dalby with AAA. “It is lower for a reason, so slowing down will help you react to lane shifts better.”
The traffic shift will impact both the westbound and eastbound lanes until approximately fall of 2025. A description of the impacts can be found below:
I-64 east
Starting on Oct. 27, there will be a single-lane closure from the I-664 interchange to Armistead Avenue — going from three to two travel lanes. In addition, motorists will be shifted left towards the inside shoulder while traveling through the work-zone.
The lane previously shared by I-64 east through traffic and I-664 south exit ramp traffic will also shift into an “exit only” lane to I-664 south.
I-64 west
Starting on Oct. 30, the lane reduction and traffic shift on I-64 west will be extended from Armistead Avenue to the I-664 interchange. VDOT encourages motorists to use I-664 as an alternate route in order to avoid the work area if possible.
