HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Police are investigating a Sunday night shooting that left one woman dead.

A call came to public safety communications around 7:44 p.m. about a gunshot victim at a home on the 1st block of Wendell Drive.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Police later identified the woman as 45-year-old Joi Kimitra Brown, who they confirmed was a teacher at Kecoughtan High School.

Police say Brown had been a heath and physical education teacher at the high school and has been working for Hampton City Schools since 2019.

Police also say a man inside the home was suffering from an unknown injury. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. An update from police Monday said the man remains hospitalized in critical condition.

According to police, the incident appears to be domestic-related.
