HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Police are investigating a shooting incident after a 22-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries early Sunday afternoon.
According to Hampton police, the call came in at around 12:10 p.m. Sunday about a shooting in the 2900 block of Shell Road.
We know that the shooting took place in front of the convenience store “Roys Quick Service”.
When police arrived they found a 22-year-old man with life threatening injuries and shattered glass.
Sunday the owner was cleaning up what’s left of the glass. Off-camera he says he saw two young men come into the store.
When they left, one of the two pointed and fired at the 22-year-old victim as he was entering the store.
The owner says he has already given surveillance footage from 17 different cameras on the property to the police to help identify the suspect.
But just two doors down, right after the shooting, a special church service was going on at Greater Faith Ministries.
“The neighborhood has embraced us tremendously and of course we do see some things that take place, but that is where we need to be, that’s where we want to be, said Nathaniel Thomas.
Thomas says they planned their service for outdoors Sunday in hopes of bringing peace to the neighborhood. He says they are right on time.
“We really thank God because it’s just confirmation that what better time it is that something happened but something is happening here,” said Thomas.
His wife Laura said this is a tragedy, something they didn’t expect to deal with, but while they pray for haling of the victim they hope something positives comes of this.
“Us being here made the difference. There wasn’t a death this time and next time maybe there won’t be a shooting. I believe God is really what’s going to make the difference,” said Laura Thomas.
On Monday, police released the identity of the suspect in connection to the shooting.
Reports say that 20-year-old Demario Evans from the 13000 block of Giovanni Court in Newport News is currently wanted in connection to the incident.
According to police, Evans has warrants for malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, shooting at an occupied building, and shooting at a public place.
