Gloucester deputies hosts ‘Drug Take Back Initiative’ for community to dispose medication

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office is providing a safe way for residents to dispose of unwanted over the counter or prescription drugs.

Deputies are expected to be at the Gloucester Walmart and Kroger on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to receive over the counter and/or prescription drugs from the community. This includes medication that’s expired.

A deputy will collect the medication from the public to be turned over to the area Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA, Office for destruction. This is an annual event in which GCSO partners with the DEA’s “Drug Take Back Initiative” to help prevent improper disposal of medications at home.

Medication disposed of improperly can create environmental issues and endanger public health.
