YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) – You may see some different looking aircraft in the skies over Hampton Roads Saturday.
Two French Rafale jets from the French Air Force are in town for a flyover of Yorktown, Williamsburg and Washington DC.
Rafales are 4th generation multi-role fighter jets used by the French Air Force. These specific jets belong to the Lafeyette Squadron – a unique squadron whose history dates back to WW1 when American pilots would train alongside French pilots. Rafales are rare jets to have in the United States – so it’s a real treat for aviation lovers to see these planes.
Major Clement with the French Air Force says they will be flying alongside an F-22 from Langley AFB during Saturday’s flyover of Yorktown. The flyover will happen between 10am and noon.
The flyover is a showcase of the partnership between the French Military and the US Military – and a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America. In 1824 and 1825, Lafayette toured the United States, visiting all 24 states. He was celebrated in each city with processions, banquets, and receptions. Lafayette – a French nobleman and military officer volunteered to join the Continental Army, which was led by General George Washigton during the American Revolutionary War.
