CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A shooting last September on Drayton Road in Chesapeake was apparently preceded by a one-on-one fight, court documents indicate.

Keyshawn Shannon, 21, faces charges including murder and aggravated assault related to the Sept. 23, 2023 shooting of five people that left a 14-year-old boy dead.

According to court documents, the incident on the 1300 block of Drayton Road, which left at least one other victim with permanent physical injuries, was preceded by a one-on-one fight.

“Prior to the shooting the victim and suspect were involved in a physical altercation,” a criminal complaint reads. “The suspect returned with two masked individuals and began to shoot at Victim 1 and several others.”

The document notes that all of the victims were shot while trying to enter a house. The 14-year-old boy was declared dead after being taken to the hospital.

Shannon was scheduled to appear in Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on June 20. However, the media was prohibited from entering the courtroom.

The eight charges he faces had originally been separated between Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court (murder and two counts of aggravated malicious wounding) and General District Court (aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm, willfully discharging firearm in public and discharging firearm at dwelling house).

In April, a General District Court judge signed off on a motion to move all of the charges to Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
