PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — One person is dead and another is seriously hurt after a wrong way crash overnight on I-264 in Portsmouth.

It happened at mile marker 1.2 in Portsmouth near Greenwood Drive, State Police say. VSP dispatch said the call came in at 12:43 a.m.

Police say the driver of a Honda Civic first went the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of I-64 in Chesapeake, before going the wrong way on eastbound I-264. The Civic eventually struck a Nissan Altima head-on, leaving the driver of the Honda, 27-year-old Clarence Cranford, dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, a 34-year-old male from Virginia Beach, was taken to Portsmouth Naval Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, police say.
