Commissioners and Cans food drive aims to support Virginians

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Come together and help join 30 Commissioners of Revenue across Virginia to make this year’s charitable food drive the largest one yet!

For the month of August, the “Commissioners & Cans” food drive will work to put a dent in the severe shortage food banks are experiencing across Virginia. Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 Virginians, including 1 in 6 children.

The food drive has raised over 65,000 meals for Virginians in need over the past 6 years.

This initiative was founded by Commissioner Tiffany Boyle of Newport News. She said, ” I’ve always believed that politics in its purest form is about the people, and this collaboration embodies public service. We are elected and have the opportunity and obligation to help whenever we can.”

Supporters can drop off food donations at any of the participating offices listed on the graphic below. Grocery gift cards can be donated as well.

According to organizers, the office that donates the most per person to their local food bank will be recognized in a special way.

Organizations, businesses, and churches are encouraged to help support with a coinciding food drive.
