CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A 21-year-old woman died after being shot late Thursday night in Chesapeake.

Police identified the woman on Monday as Dashay Monique Whack, of Norfolk.

“Her life just started and it’s gone,” said neighbor Cassandra Knight. “It’s ended. It’s not cool at all.”

It’s hard to understand why anyone would take a life, they said.

“Every time you turn around you have to get another ‘RIP’ T-shirt or something of that nature,” added neighbor Larry Griffin. “I have more ‘RIP’ T-shirts than I have regular clothes, and it is a shame.”

Neighbors along Acorn Street heard the sound of gunfire late Thursday night.

“I heard two shots and then I heard screaming,” Knight said.

Police responded to the scene in the 1700 block of Acorn Street around 11:50 p.m. When they arrived, they found the 21-year-old woman who had been shot.

“When I came outside, I saw caution tape everywhere and there was a young lady on the ground,” Griffin added.

“Growing up in this area I had seen it so many times, and a 21-year-old is so sad,” Griffin said.

Whack was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

On Friday, just hours after the tragedy, detectives were back in the neighborhood searching for clues. They put up signs hoping the community can help find the person who shot her.

“When I heard the scream, I wish I could have done something differently,” Griffin added.
