CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police are trying to figure out what sparked a deadly shooting in Chesapeake — the third deadly shooting on the same block in less than a year — while neighbors remember a man who they say was a valuable part of the community.

The shooting happened Thursday night around 10 p.m. on Shady Lane, off Campostella Road near Indian River.

“It’s just really sad, and we need to get to the bottom of it,” said a neighbor who did not wish to be identified but did know the man who was killed.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Virginia Beach resident Kacey Johnson.

“I know these people, these people try to become a part of their community, and make it better, and come together. And other people don’t want to see that,” she said.

Neighbors told WAVY-TV the victim was the father of a little girl.

“This is tragic, this is really tragic,” said Terrell Cuffee, president of the League of Advocates.

“We need to look into creating better opportunities for kids who made mistakes earlier in their lives, but are looking to do better,” Cuffee said.

Cuffee also knew the shooting victim. He says the violence happening in the Campostella part of Chesapeake will only be fixed when there are long-term solutions in place.
