CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A recycling center in Chesapeake caught fire Saturday afternoon causing a cloud of gray smoke that was seen for miles.

Officials tell 10 On Your Side that the fire broke out around 1:10 p.m. at the Sims Metal recycling center on Buell Street in Chesapeake. That is south of the Jordan Bridge.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a large pile of scrap metal on fire. They described seeing heavy smoke and flames.

The pile was determined to be about 250ft long by 250ft wide and 30ft high.

Firefighters say the fire was under control around 6:15 p.m.

There were no injures or structural damage to any nearby buildings, city officials say.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
