CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been arrested after an employee was shot during an attempted robbery at Andy’s Barber Shop along Indian River Road Thursday morning, police said.
The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Rashed Kennedy, who was charged with seven felonies and two misdemeanors. He also received a separate misdemeanor of failure to appear from August. He’s being held in the Chesapeake City Jail
According to officials, just before 11:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of Indian River Road for reports of a shooting at a business.
Police said the suspect entered the business and attempted to rob it, resulting in an employee being shot. The suspect then ran away.
The employee was taken to a local hospital be be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
“He’s my nephew; he told me what happened,” a family member said. “He was in the barber shop cutting hair and somebody came in here and robbed and shot him. … He came in here getting his hair cut, and then robbed him.”
The family member said that her nephew was minding his own business and was at work trying to take care of his wife and son when he got shot.
10 On Your Side asked the relative how angry she was about what happened.
“How angry am I? I’m pissed off,” the family member said. “He doesn’t bother anyone. He was at work taking care of his livelihood, taking care of his wife and son, and somebody tried to rob him … and shot him.”
A customer in the shop next door to Andy’s Barber Shop said that “I was in there in the nail place, and it happened. We just heard, ‘Boom, boom.’ All the technicians, they ran outside. I couldn’t because the lady was doing my feet, but it was ‘boom boom.'”
The incident remains under investigation.
