Chesapeake man dies, 8-year-old seriously hurt after tugboat, skiff collide near Jordan Bridge in Elizabeth River

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Marine Police confirmed a Chesapeake man was killed and two other people were injured after a skiff collided with a tugboat Wednesday night in the Elizabeth River near the Jordan Bridge.

Marine police said the man who died, 36-year-old David Myatt was pronounced dead at the scene after the incident. Another man, 37-year-old Suffolk resident Matthew Tillman suffered minor injuries and an 8-year-old child was taken to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk in serious condition.

The call came in reporting the incident around 9:15 p.m. The Coast Guard Station Portsmouth, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Norfolk Fire-Rescue boats, U.S. Navy units, a Coast Guard helicopter and Chesapeake Fire-Rescue responded.

Crews from Chesapeake police and Chesapeake fire could be seen bringing a skiff from out of the middle of the river.

Behind the skiff, was a 59-foot tugboat named the “Miss Judy.” Scene tape was set up around the docks at Elizabeth River Park. Police say Myatt was operating the 19-foot Carolina Skiff when it struck the tug.

The scene remained active as of 11:30 p.m. Investigators with Chesapeake fire, Virginia Marine Police and Coast Guard Mid-Atlantic were on both boats that were brought to the docks at that time.

Virginia Marine Police said the investigation into the cause of the collision was ongoing, and they sent their condolences to the families.
