Officers breach apartment looking for suspect after man shot near Chesapeake school

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police have taken one person into custody and are searching for another after a man was hurt in a shooting near a school in Chesapeake on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities are still at the scene looking for the suspected shooter, who’s potentially in one of the apartment units in the area.

This comes after police already took one man into custody around 3 p.m. He was in a separate apartment.

Around 4:19 p.m., police breached the door to a second apartment and deployed stun grenades, before sending a drone inside to look for another suspect. Just after 5 p.m., several officers went into the apartment.

Police first responded around 1:20 p.m., to the 1700 block of Acorn Street for the report of a shooting, and found a man suffering a non life-threatening gunshot wound. The suspect had fled the scene.

Meanwhile, G.W. Carver Intermediate School was placed on lockdown due its proximity to the shooting scene. The lockdown has since been lifted, and kids are expected to be released on time.

However, students who live in the Broadlawn neighborhood at Carver and Oscar Smith middle and high schools are being held at Carver until police give the all clear.
