PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Events are being held across the Hampton Roads region to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, marks the 23rd anniversary of the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. Some events will be held on Sept. 11, while others are on the weekend/later this month.

Chesapeake

9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance: The ceremony starts at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the Chesapeake 9/11 Memorial at 900 City Park Drive.

Hampton

Langley Air Force Base will hold a 9/11 memorial ceremony on Wednesday, September 11 starting at 8:46 a.m. The event will be led by the fire department and will include a ruck march around 9:15 a.m. For more details, click here.

Newport News

The city’s law enforcement and fire departments will be at an event at Christopher Newport University’s Gaines Theatre at 10 a.m.

Norfolk

Naval Station Norfolk will host a wreath laying ceremony at 8 a.m. at the flag plaza across from the Naval Station Norfolk headquarters building.

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb: This event, a fundraisers that’s open to the public, will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 14 at Norfolk Scope. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories to honor the heroes of 9/11. You’re asked to register in advance.

Portsmouth

The city will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at High Street Landing. It’s open to the public.

Virginia Beach

The 9/11 Heroes Run will be September 28 at 8 a.m. at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. Click here to register and for more information.
