NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Two people are dead after a fiery crash on Interstate 64 westbound in New Kent County Friday morning, Virginia State Police said.

A vehicle struck a tree and then caught fire around 10:57 a.m., State Police said. The tree fell across all westbound lanes and part of the eastbound I-64 lanes at mile marker 205.

Troopers are working to identify the victims and notify next of kin.

All westbound I-64 lanes in New Kent County are now open, as of around 4:30 p.m. and the scene is clear, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation, though drivers can expect residual delays.

Traffic had been detoured in the area, and VDOT reported backups of more than three miles. There had also a five-mile backup due to congestion on Va. 249, in the area of Airport Road and Tunstall Road (Rt. 612).

The crash remains under investigation.
