PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect wanted in a bank robbery in Isle of Wight County has been caught in a Portsmouth neighborhood, WAVY’s Jason Marks reports.

Portsmouth police said in a tweet Wednesday morning the fugitive was tracked down to Channing Avenue, in the Cradock neighborhood. Officers from Chesapeake and Portsmouth responded to the scene.

The streets surrounding Channing Avenue were closed off, the tweet said.

A standoff between police and the suspect, 42-year-old Daryl Myrick, at a trailer behind a home on Channing Avenue lasted around five hours.

10 On Your Side has learned Myrick was living in the trailer.

Officers knocked on the door, but Myrick refused to come out, prompting SWAT to respond to the scene. SWAT officers forced Myrick out using heavy equipment.

The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Myrick is the suspect wanted for robbing an Old Point National Bank last week in Carrollton.

10 On Your Side has learned Myrick is also facing a wide range of charges in Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Charlottesville. Myrick was taken to Chesapeake for questioning.

Police initially said James Hurst Elementary and Cradock Middle School were placed on modified lockdowns. However, a Portsmouth Public Schools spokesperson said the schools were never on lockdown.

“All I see is just a whole lot of police,” said witness Nicole Johnson.

“I am seeing a residential neighborhood that currently looks like a war zone,” added witness Keyshia Holmes. “There are tanks, there are rifles, assault weapons and there are cops everywhere.  It is absolutely ridiculous.”

“I don’t know the man personally to know why he is making the choices he is making, but it would be easier on everyone else if he would just come on out,” Holmes added.

We’re told officers found items used in the robbery inside his trailer. Myrick is currently being held in the Chesapeake City Jail.
