PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate died early Tuesday morning at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

Jail officials say Davageah K. Jones, 18, was found unresponsive in his cell during a “morning pill pass” and life-saving procedures were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead around 4:53 a.m.

Jones had only been at the jail since April 26. He was being held on charges of breaking and entering and possession of marijuana from the City of Chesapeake.

The jail says it’s conducting an administrative review into Jones’ death and the Portsmouth Police Department has been notified.

This marks the most recent death for the highly-scrutinized jail, which was the focus of a federal investigation that opened in 2016. The jail’s most recent superintendent just resigned back in March after a year on the job.
