How to keep your home warm without breaking the bank

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – With the temperatures getting colder each day, many people are going to be reaching for their thermostat.

But it’s important to know how to keep your home warm without running up your bill.

Cherise Newsome with Dominion Energy says it’s all about smart energy usage. She told 10 On Your Side the first thing people should do is make sure there aren’t any cracks in windows or doors that would let heat seep out.

It is also important to get your heat appliances serviced to make sure everything is working correctly.

According to Newsome, if you forget those two things, you run the risk of overusing energy, which could result in a higher bill.

But she said Dominion Energy is there to help through their Energy Saving Program and questionnaire.

“And based upon your answers, we will send you a kit at no cost with some items that you can use to seal up those cracked windows. For example, we provide things like door suites that you can use to block out cold drafts from coming into your home or installation that you can use around your windows and pipes and things like that,” Newsome said.
