Volunteer at Matthew Whaley Elementary in Williamsburg tested positive for coronavirus

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Matthew Whaley Elementary School closed Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after a school volunteer told school officials she tested positive for coronavirus.

The announcement marks the first case with a connection to a local school. On Friday the number of cases in James City County rose from two to seven, making it the highest concentration of cases in Virginia.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools Superintendent Olwen Herron says the district is working to contact the “small number of families whose child may have come in contact with this person”.

“Obviously, this news is upsetting to all of us … we continue to be in contact with the health department,” Herron said.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has ordered all K-12 schools in the commonwealth to be closed for a minimum of two weeks due to the coronavirus.
