COVID-19 testing offered by healthcare providers across Hampton Roads

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Health care providers across Hampton Roads are offering coronavirus testing, but not everyone who is sick will receive the test.

The Virginia Department of Health has determined that not everyone with coronavirus needs to be tested for the disease. Doctors make the final decision about who should be tested for COVID-19, and community members who believe they have the virus should call their healthcare provider to determine treatment.

“Many people who are sick with COVID-19 have mild illness and can get better at home without medical care,” according to the VDH. “There is no treatment or medicine specifically for COVID-19.  In most cases, a test result that shows you have COVID-19 would not change what a doctor tells you to do to get better.  If you have signs or symptoms of COVID-19, stay home and keep yourself away from others.”

Healthcare providers in Hampton Roads will typically test a person for COVID-19 if they are symptomatic. Symptoms that can lead to COVID-19 testing include a fever, a cough, and shortness of breath.

The VDH has released a map of COVID-19 testing locations in Hampton Roads. The map is not complete. It does not include known testing locations like Sentara Healthcare and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Before attempting to get a COVID-19 test, call your doctor or one of the healthcare providers listed below. Doctors will screen patients and determine if they need to be tested for coronavirus, or if they can self-quarantine at home.

Hospitals and doctors offices are also treating other ailments and medical emergencies during the coronavirus pandemic. If you are suffering non coronavirus-related emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest hospital for treatment.

This is a list of known COVID-19 testing locations in the Hampton Roads region:

CHKD

The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters is offering COVID-19 testing at its laboratory. CHKD purchased analyzer equipment two years ago that is now being used for COVID-19 testing, said Mary-Margaret Fisher, laboratory operations manager.

Testing location:

If your child has a fever and a cough and has been in contact with someone with COVID-19, call your healthcare provider before seeking medical attention. If necessary, your provider will take steps to safely evaluate your child while keeping others from being exposed.

CHKD’s lab will only perform COVID-19 testing with a doctor’s order. It is not a community screening site.

CVS

CVS Health opened 39 new drive-thru coronavirus testing sites across Virginia on May 29. The company says the new testing sites will use self-swab tests and will be provided to people who meet the criteria issued by the CDC and the state.

To get a test you must register in advance at CVS.com to see if you qualify for coronavirus testing and to schedule an appointment.

Patients must be 18 years of age or older.

If you qualify to be tested, you will then be prompted to select a test site and available time. There are several locations across Hampton Roads.

Before you leave for your appointment, be sure to have your insurance card and proof of identity. You’ll also need your test confirmation email or text message.

East Beach Urgent Care – Norfolk

Location: 9545 Shore Drive, Norfolk, VA

If you need a test for COVID-19, East Beach Urgent Care requires you to complete this form HERE and the office will contact you as soon as possible.

Due to overwhelming demand, they are testing by appointment only. 

If you are having symptoms, you will first be required to do a virtual appointment from your phone or computer with one of their providers. If you are doing screening only (post exposure or retest after positive result), you will be tested from your car after your registration is complete.

Hampton Roads Community Health Center – Portsmouth

Criteria For Testing: For Uninsured or Underinsured Patients

Call 757-393-6363, and press option 1, to schedule an appointment.

Insurance Information: Accept most commercial insurances, Virginia Medicaid and Medicare.  Sliding scale discount fee available for uninsured patients.

M.D. Express Urgent Care

M.D. Express Urgent Care , the Peninsula’s largest provider of urgent care service, now offers COVID-19 active testing and antibody testing — available at the doctor’s discretion.

There are six Hampton Roads locations:

Patient First

Patient First is now offering both active coronavirus virus testing and COVID-19 antibody testing at several of its locations.

COVID-19 Active Virus Testing

Drive-up COVID-19 testing will be done by appointment only.

To make an appointment, call your preferred Center and enter “5” during the recording to speak with the front desk.  You may call to make an appointment anytime between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.  Appointments are scheduled between 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In order to make an appointment to be tested, patients must be at least 5 years old and must meet screening criteria, which are based on CDC guidance.

COVID-19 Antibody Testing

COVID-19 Antibody Testing is now available at all Patient First Centers from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. No appointment is needed – just walk in. Click here to find your closest Patient First Center.

Antibody testing is for patients who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, but who want to know if they have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past and have developed antibodies to the virus that causes this disease. If the test result is positive for antibodies, however, that does not indicate immunity to a future infection with COVID-19. All Patient First Medical Centers, including the designated testing centers, remain open for patients who need medical or injury walk-in care from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day.

Rite Aid

Rite Aid is offering drive-thru coronavirus testing at several locations in Hampton Roads.

Appointments can be made online.

Rite Aid says the testing sites will utilize self-swab nasal tests overseen by Rite Aid pharmacists and will operate between the hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to Sunday.

Anyone 18 years or older, and even if not experiencing virus symptoms are eligible and can begin pre-registering online to schedule a time slot for testing.

Sentara

Sentara emergency departments are currently testing patients who present with symptoms of COVID-19 or meet screening criteria determined by Virginia and North Carolina Health Departments. Sentara encourages people who believe they have been exposed to COVID-19 but are without symptoms to isolate at home, monitor their health, and seek testing if or when they develop symptoms. People can use the self-screening tool on www.sentara.com or the COVID-19 chatbot on the Sentara app to decide how to proceed.

Sentara Healthcare also continues to partner with local health departments, the Urban League, Hispanic Resource Center of Coastal Virginia, NAACP chapters, community organizations and faith groups to provide free COVID-19 testing in underserved communities. Sentara announced that planned events throughout the summer and early fall will include northeast North Carolina and additional groups like Hampton Roads Transit employees.

Velocity Urgent Care

Velocity Urgent Care is offering coronavirus testing at all of its locations.

It is also offering drive-thru COVID-19 testing at its Virginia Beach Red Mill and Newport News J. Clyde Morris Boulevard locations Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those who cannot go to a drive-thru testing location should call their nearest Velocity Urgent Care center to make arrangements for COVID-19 testing.

Testing locations in Hampton Roads:

Walgreens

Through a partnership, the Virginia Department of Health and Walgreens now have 26 stores in Virginia that offer rapid testing at no cost to the public.

The drive-thru testing is available to those age 3 and up.

Walmart

Walmart has added several new bi-weekly COVID-19 drive-thru testing locations in Hampton Roads.

The drive-thru testing sites is available to those who meet CDC and state and local guidelines on who should be tested, including first responders, health care providers and others with symptoms of COVID-19 and those in high risk groups without symptoms.

All sites use a self-administered nasal swab test that allows those being tested to swab their own nose onsite while in their vehicles, observed by a trained Walmart pharmacist.

Williamsburg Urgent Care

Williamsburg Urgent Care now offers testing for COVID-19 active cases as well as COVID-19 antibody testing.

Call the office or log on to make an appointment for a telemedicine visit and discuss your symptoms with a doctor. If your symptoms are suggestive of the coronavirus and you meet the expanded CDC criteria, you will be given an appointment to “SWAB-N-GO”. You will be given instructions on how to accurately swab your nose in your car, then drop off your test in the drop box. The office will send it to the lab and call you with your results.
