HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The continuing spread of the coronavirus has prompted school closures in Virginia and North Carolina.

Each school district is handling closures differently. You can learn about how local leaders are responding here.

Many school districts will continue feeding students as they are able. Here is what you need to know about those feeding programs:

VIRGINIA

Accomack County 

Food services will continue to serve meals to students Monday through Thursday at the following sites:

  • Chincoteague Elementary School
  • Arcadia High School
  • Kegotank Elementary School
  • Metompkin Elementary School
  • Tangier Combined School
  • Accawmacke Elementary School
  • Pungoteague Elementary School
  • Nandua Middle School.

Chesapeake

Beginning Monday, April 17 lunch and breakfast items will be provided to children on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Meals will be given out to cover the entire week including Saturday and Sunday.

Gloucester County 

Lunch and breakfast items will be served for three from Monday through Thursday between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:

  • Abington Elementary – 7087 Powhatan Dr.

  • Petsworth Elementary – 10658 George Washington Memorial Hwy.
  • Gloucester High School – 6680 Short Ln.

Students will receive an extra meal on Thursday to supplement for Friday.

Effective Monday, April 20 Hampton City Schools will be consolidating student meal services to Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Families can pick up two days worth of meals on Monday and Wednesday at the following locations:

Norfolk

Norfolk Public Schools will serve grab-and-go breakfast and lunch meals to students Monday through Friday.

Norfolk Public Schools has expanded its meal distribution to include providing weekend meals to students starting May 1. Every Friday, children will be given additional breakfast and lunch items for Saturday in Sunday, in addition to their regular weekday meal.

Meals will be distributed at the following sites from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Azalea Gardens Middle School
  • Booker T. Washington High School
  • Camp Allen Elementary School
  • Coleman Place Elementary School
  • James Monroe Elementary School
  • Lake Taylor School
  • Norview Elementary School
  • Oceanair Elementary School
  • P.B. Young Elementary School
  • Southside STEM Academy
  • St. Helena Elementary School
  • Suburban Park Elementary School.

NPS school buses will also continue to delivery food on weekdays at the following sites:

  • Titustown Recreation Center: 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Huntersville Community Center: Noon – 12:30 p.m.
  • Grandy Village Recreation Center: 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. 

Beginning May 11, NPS will add five new food distribution sites. In a news release, the school system said these sites are being added due to an “increased demand for meals.”

The new distribution sites include:

  • Crossroads School
  • Little Creek Primary School
  • Ocean View Elementary School
  • Tanners Creek Elementary School
  • Tidewater Park Elementary School

Also beginning May 11, meal distribution sites will adopt a new schedule.

Meals will be distributed on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will receive multiple meals on the days of distribution to account for food on Tuesdays, Thursday, and the weekends.

Northampton County

Northampton County Public Schools has temporarily stopped its food program after some employees were exposed to COVID-19.

Portsmouth

Free meals will be distributed by Portsmouth Public Schools and the City of Portsmouth on weekdays.
