The latest coronavirus updates:
6:15 p.m. Henrico County reports 18 new cases of coronavirus at rehabilitation & healthcare center.
5:45 p.m. VDH reported the eighth death of a Peninsula resident due to the coronavirus. This case was not included in today’s VDH case totals. It will be added tomorrow. No further details are available.
3 p.m. Norfolk City Councilman Tommy Smigiel warns residents of the possible closure of beaches in Ocean View as more people disregard social distancing practices.
The councilman sounded off on social media Sunday afternoon, asking the community to “be smart” as the confirmed cases of COVID-19 keeps rising in Virginia.
1 p.m. A fifth confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported at Newport News Shipbuilding.
President Jennifer Boykin confirmed the report on social media Sunday afternoon.
Boykin said the employee worked at building 600-1, (Off-Yard Office, 39th St. and Marshall Ave.). The last time the employee was at NNS was on March 13.
In a letter from HRT, they say the employee, who worked in the light rail division, last showed up to work on March 17. They have since been quarantined.
This marks the first HRT employee to have a confirmed case of the virus.
9:30 a.m. The Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools provided an update on the academic plan for the remainder of the school year, now that all schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lesson plans are all posted on the At-Home Learning website.
9 a.m. The confirmed cases in Virginia rose to 890 Sunday from 739 on Saturday. The Virginia Department of Health reported 5 deaths Sunday.
