Coronavirus Saturday updates: Virginia sees rise of almost 400 cases in one day

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — From Friday to Saturday, the number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia have risen by almost 400.

As of Saturday morning, the Virginia Department of Health confirms 2,407 cases with 52 deaths and 390 hospitalizations total.

The highest amount of confirmed cases are people between the ages of 50 to 59 with 466 cases, covering 19.4% of the total number. Saturday’s announcement reported a slightly higher number of women (1,199 total) with confirmed cases compared to men (1,162).

The governor tweeted Saturday night that he has approved final recommendations and construction will begin soon at three facilities:

Dulles Expo Center Northern Virginia, which can accommodate 315 acute or 510 non-acute beds
Hampton Roads Convention Center, providing 360 acute or 580 non-acute beds
Richmond Convention Center, which could bring 432 acute or 758 non-acute beds online

We have been working with @USACEHQ to identify and evaluate alternative care sites, which will free up bed capacity in our existing hospital system.
