NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The 48th annual Harborfest brought large crowds to downtown Norfolk Friday and is expected to do so throughout the weekend.
The festival had something for everyone, from games for kids, to music, food, and more.
But of course, the tall ships drew the most eyes.
One of those ships, the American Rover, is at Waterside year-round for recreational tours.
Capt. Brandon Peter told 10 On Your Side that’s just part of what makes his ship so special.
“We’re a three massive schooner,” Peter said. “It’s 135 feet overall, 24 feet wide. We’re able to carry more than 120 passengers at a time. We’ve got top deck, below deck, snack bar, regular bar, live entertainment most nights of the week.”
And of course, it wouldn’t be Harborfest without some pirates.
The Defiant Crew Pirate Group has been at the event for 10 years teaching kids how to walk and talk like pirates.
Capt. Barnabee Wilde walked us through what they call “pirate school.”
“Teaching them how to use a block and tackle so one person can do the job of four,” Wilde said. “We’re also teaching them how to do a line haul to a sea shanty work song, so all the people can do an even bigger job. It fits in with SOLs, it’s a lot of fun — educational. And they all get a piece of gold when we’re done.”
But wait, there’s more.
Extreme sports also had a place at Harborfest.
Professional extreme pogo athlete Harry White showcased some amazing tricks like flips and a skill called “the Superman.”
He’s been touring with the X Pogo Stunt Team since 2016.
“I was in England last week, China at the beginning of May, I’m in America now and I’m from Canada,” White said.
However, he said nothing compares to some hometown shows.
“It’s really nice here, the weather’s awesome, I don’t think it’s going to rain all weekend, so definitely come out to Norfolk Harborfest,” White said. “And it’s just really homey. Everyone’s been so nice that I’ve talked to.”
The night ended with a spectacular drone show lighting up the sky with thousands of colorful lights.
