Former ODU football player convicted of assault, malicious wounding

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A former football player for Old Dominion University was convicted Thursday to charges in a 2017 assault case.

A spokesperson for the Office of the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney said Devin Hannan was found guilty of malicious wounding and assault and battery.

Hannan’s and fellow teammate at the time, Manuel Matiarena, were arrested following an incident in June 2017 outside The Edge, which is a bar near ODU’s campus.

Police said two men were injured in the incident — one of whom had to be taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.

Matiarena pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault and battery charge in January.

Hannan is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 20.
