VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The family of India Kager, the woman killed in the crossfire of an officer-involved shooting in 2015, and the City of Virginia Beach have agreed to a jury’s ruling that the city must pay the family $800,000 in wrongful death damages. 

On August 27, the jury ruled two police officers in the shooting were partially liable in Kager’s death, and awarded the family $400,000 for each instance. Kager and Angelo Perry were both killed by gunfire outside a gas station in September of 2015. Police say Perry fired at officers first, and officers returned fire.

Kager’s 4-month-old child was in the backseat at the time, but was unharmed.

Both the family and Virginia Beach had both discussed appealing the decision. The city didn’t want to pay anything, while Kager’s family thought they could get more. The family originally asked for $30 million in damages.
