NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police responded to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Sunday night in reference to an infant who had been removed from the hospital.
Officers were dispatched to CHKD, located at 601 Childrens Lane, around 10:50 p.m. after getting reports of an infant who was taken out of the hospital by a parent.
The child was returned to the hospital a short time later after being located in Chesapeake.
Following an investigation, Stephanie E. Wallace, 31, was taken into custody and charged with felony child abuse. She was taken to the Norfolk jail, where she remains without bond.
Wallace also goes by the last name Campbell, according to Norfolk Police. A woman with the name of Stephanie Campbell is currently being held by the Norfolk’s Sheriff’s office and is due in court tomorrow morning facing the same charges Norfolk Police assigned to Wallace.
Norfolk Police confirmed Monday evening that Stephanie E. Wallace and Stephanie E. Campbell are the same person.
A spokesperson for CHKD would not discuss specifics on what happened, but did issue a statement to WAVY.
“CHKD has several levels of security to protect patients, beginning with limiting visitors to parents/legal guardians — who have a legal right to be with their child and a short list of parent-approved visitors. In rare instances, parents may decide to remove their child from the hospital. If removing a child from the hospital puts that child’s health at risk, CHKD is legally obligated to contact appropriate authorities to safeguard the well-being of the child.”
