VSP investigating fatal two-vehicle crash at the MMMBT

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash at the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT) Saturday night.

According to officials, on Aug. 24 around 10:50 p.m., 44-year-old John Edward Williams stopped on the closed shoulder on the northbound lanes of the MMMBT due to mechanical issues. Shortly afterwards, Williams exited his vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu, and began checking the Malibu’s engine.

While Williams was checking the engine, the driver of a 2017 Mercedes Benz, later identified as 34-year-old David Clayton Rosas, ran off the roadway and struck the rear of Williams’ Malibu, police said.

The impact of the crash caused the Malibu to also hit Williams. He was then transferred to Riverside Regional Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. Williams succumbed to his injuries on Monday, Aug. 26.

Officers charged Rosas with reckless driving. Police said additional charges could be pending.

Alcohol and speed were not contributing factors to the crash, and the cause remains under investigation.
