VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police are asking for help identifying three people who entered a hotel under construction on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach and caused nearly $100,000 in damage.

Virginia Beach Crime Solvers said three males went onto the site at Delta Hotels Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites, 2800 Shore Drive, on the night of Feb. 5 and destroyed walls, computers and television screens, and also stole several items.

“It’s very clear that their intent really was just to cause as much damage as they really could,” said Duane Gauthier, managing director of Commonwealth Lodging Management.

Commonwealth Lodging operates the hotel.

The damage included spray paint on walls, paint on television and computer screens, broken televisions, a broken vending machine and more.

“They decided to enter one of the mechanical rooms and damaged our energy management system,” said Gauthier. “They opened up packaging of food, beverage, busted and broke bottles, kind of spread it throughout the kitchen — just made a complete mess.”

Crime Solvers says the trio caused almost $100,000 in damage, but police said they didn’t yet have an exact estimate of the damage as they had not completed the inventory by the time the report was written and submitted.

The hotel has been under renovation for two years. It’s a $27-million project.

“It’s hard to get your head wrapped around why someone would even think to do something like this,” Gauthier said.

It’s the second hotel to be targeted. Police confirmed to 10 On Your Side someone broke into and vandalized the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront three weeks ago.

We talked to a Wyndham employee off-camera who told us the suspects damaged laptops, poured drink mixes on furniture and stole alcohol.

Police said it’s not yet known if the two cases are connected, however the Wyndham employee said the suspects caught on their surveillance cameras appear to be wearing similar clothing.

Folks back at Delta Hotels hope someone will recognize the suspects and turn them in.

“We would hate for this to happen to anybody else,” Gauthier said.

Despite the damage, the hotel is still set to open in March.

The case has been assigned to a detective and it is actively being investigated.
