VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A woman will spend 28 years in prison in connection with the murder of a 4-month-old baby.
According to a release from the City of Virginia Beach, 43-year-old Shyan J. Csatlos was found guilty of second-degree felony murder and child abuse/neglect on Nov. 2, 2023 following a four-day trial.
She was just sentenced on those charges, according to an update from the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office on May 30.
Evidence provided by the Commonwealth states that on Aug. 15, 2019, Csatlos began providing daycare at her home for then 3-month-old “N.W.” While under Csatlos’ care, N.W. had to be taken to the hospital on two separate occasions due to vomiting and extreme fussiness.
N.W.’s parents stated that prior to being under Csatlos’ care, he was a happy, healthy baby.
On Sept, 17, 2019, N.W.’s mother dropped him off at Csatlos’ home. Video showed the baby drinking from a bottle that morning. Just before noon, Csatlos called 911 to report that N.W. was unresponsive.
First responders arrived to the home and transferred N.W. to the Children’s Hospital of King’s Daughters (CHKD) due to his temperature of 90.4 degrees Fahrenheit and his purple and blue appearance.
N.W. remained at CHKD until his death on Sept. 21, 2019.
Csatlos provided investigators with various different accounts of what happened, but was unable to provide an explanation for why N.W. was unconscious under her care.
Several different medical professionals, including CHKD physicians, provided testimony, where they determined that N.W. suffered an abusive head trauma.
Circuit Court Judge Afshin Farashahi sentenced Csatlos to 50 years with 22 years suspended, exceeding the Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines, which recommended a sentence no greater than 22 years and 8 months.
