SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk Police have charged a man in connection to the shooting death of a city woman on Mill Lake Road early Tuesday morning.

Antonio Kiawana Newsome, 43, of Norfolk has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a Suffolk woman and has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Newsome is currently being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Police identified the victim as Jackquelyn Marie Stevenson, 29. According to officials, police were notified around 8:05 a.m. about a possible gunshot victim in the 2000 block of Mill Lake Road.

When officers arrived, they found a woman, later identified as Stevenson, suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said she was shot and killed outside the car and was found on the ground next to the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

WAVY News 10’s Andy Fox went out to gather more on this incident and saw Suffolk Police’s investigation focused on a foot path between two bodies of water. He also saw a red car being towed from the scene, but they would not allow 10 On Your Side down Mill Lake Road to get to the scene.

After going up U.S. Highways 13 and 58 parallel to the crime scene, police moved the criminal investigations truck to block the view.

So, 10 On Your Side then came in the other way on Mill Lake Road and found the scene, where the red car was the object of the investigation for a woman shot and killed.

“Yes, I’m shocked because, like I say, this is a nice neighborhood,” said Angela Sullivan, who lives in the Old Mill Creek neighborhood. “… I have never heard of any crime there … in the parking lot of the walkway to a picnic area.”

Sullivan said she sees a lot of traffic in and out of that parking lot.

“Yea, I see vehicles parked there all hours of the night,” Sullivan said, “and in the morning, because I get up at 4 in the morning, so I’ll leave at 5 in the morning, and I’ll see a car parked there, and I… like, ask myself…what are they doing?”

10 On Your Side was here when police prepared the body for transport, and then the tow truck showed up to tow away the red car.

“It’s alarming,” Sullivan said. “It is shocking because this is a really nice neighborhood. … I rarely see people there. I know people go and put boats in the water and go fishing, even those who are not supposed to, because only people who live in this area are allowed to.”
