NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk State University has confirmed a 20-year-old junior was the victim of an off-campus shooting on Saturday.
In a statement, NSU said the incident occurred just after 11 p.m. in the 2700 block of Gate House Road. The victim, Jahari George from Maryland, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Police said George was found shot inside a vehicle. In an update on Monday morning, police did not share an update on a possible suspect, but said the investigation was ongoing. They initially said a person of interest was detained in the case.
Following the shooting, NSU has limited access to campus to only Gates #1 and #3. NSUPD has also increased patrols on campus and at all off-campus hotel locations where students live.
The NSU Counseling Center will offer counseling and support for students who have experienced trauma or distress related to this event.
Counselors will be available in the Student Center lobby. The center offers a safe and confidential environment for Spartans to discuss their feelings with experienced professionals. If support is needed, please contact the center at (757) 823-8173, and after-hours at (757) 823-9000 to speak with an on-call counselor.
A friend of George’s family established a GoFundMe. Erica Moore, who created the account, described Jahari as “a wonderful young man with an amazing light.” She said he was “extremely, loving and caring. All that knew him, loved him. He was a true bright star.” Click here for the GoFundMe link.
This is not the only instance of a shooting near the school’s campus that has taken the life of a student.
Last year, 19-year-old Angelia McKnight, a second-year pre-nursing student, was killed at a house party closer to ODU’s campus.
Seven people in total were shot that night. 25-year-old Zabre Miller died in addition to McKnight.
Police are also investigating a recent off-campus shooting at the nearby 7-Eleven in the 1500 block of Brambleton Avenue. Four people were injured by gunfire on August 18.
