MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) – A man has died and a suspect is in custody following a hit-and-run on the Washington Baum Bridge in Manteo.
The crash happened around midnight on June 30. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a pedestrian pushing a bike eastbound on the Washington Baum Bridge near Pirates Cove was hit by a Jeep from behind. The Jeep then fled the scene, police said.
The victim, 63-year-old Scott William Dawson, was transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical condition. He died on July 3, authorities confirmed.
Officers with North Carolina Highway Patrol said the suspect, 44-year-old Mark Thomas Sulllivan, hid the vehicle in the Collington neighborhood. Sullivan was identified through photos of the Jeep leaving the bridge and by cross referencing the wreckage left behind on the vehicle.
Sullivan, who had a pending DUI from a separate incident, was arrested and charged with felony hit and run inflicting serious injury or death, driving while license revoked and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a pedestrian.
