CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — April 15, 2009, would be the last time Kim Sherbert and Diane Compton would hear the voices of their sons after their lives were tragically taken by senseless gun violence in Chesapeake.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Joshua Compton and Mason Jones’ death — they would have been in their early thirties now.
Chesapeake Detective Tracey Alexander told 10 On Your Side last week in an interview that no arrests have been made in the case and a motive is still unclear.
“Their voice, it’s just, you know, I really miss them,” said Diane Compton, the mother of Joshua Compton. “I wish people out there would wake up and look around. Because if people like us don’t stand up for this, then these people out there are going to keep on dying.”
Those were the heartfelt words shared with 10 On Your Side as they both continue to grieve their losses. The mothers say Joshua and Mason were great kids who were not involved in any drug-related or gang-related activity. Neither could fathom anyone wanting to harm the boys, let alone take their lives.
“I didn’t understand that,” said Kim Sherbert, the mother of Mason Jones. “I mean, Josh was only 17, Mason’s 16. Now, what could they have done so horrible?”
As they await justice, they shared what they would say to the men involved in the murder.
“I hope you get the death penalty because of what you did to my son,” Sherbert said. “Why should you be able to wake up and talk to your mom or talk to one of your children when I don’t get that opportunity because of you.”
As for Diane Compton, she hopes the suspect is caught while she is still alive. She cited that her husband died four years ago and would never be able to possibly see his son’s killer.
“I’m already 75, so I mean, I don’t think I have a whole lot of time left, but I hope I have enough time to see this murder come to justice,” Compton said.
Investigators believe there are three Black male suspects involved but are still short of leads to help find them.
