ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – The Elizabeth City Police Department and supporting agencies held a news conference Monday to discuss several recent shooting incidents.
This past weekend, Chief of Police J. Philip Webster said the city experienced a number of shots fired incidents. Although many involved gunfire damage to occupied homes, he said there are no reported injuries.
Several weapons were recovered during the investigations, which were on display during the news conference.
Chief Webster detailed a timeline of the events and a summary of the incidents, outlined below.
Friday, March 1, 2024:
- 2:44 p.m. Three males were observed wearing hoodies, face masks and carrying weapons along Harney and Cypress streets. They ran when law enforcement arrived. The individuals were not apprehended, but police recovered six firearms: an AR-15 style pistol, an AK-47 style weapon, two 9mm pistols and two .380 caliber pistols.
Saturday, March 2, 2024:
- 8:03 p.m. An occupied home in the 100 block of Sutton Drive was struck by gunfire. Two vehicles in the area were also damaged. There were no injuries reported.
- 10:15 p.m. Several callers and a Pasquotank County deputy reported hearing gunfire in the area of Brooks Avenue and Speed Street. Officers responded and observed three subjects behind the Olive Branch Missionary Church. Officers located several shell casings in the church parking lot. ECPD also discovered a nearby home, in the 500 block of Madrin Street, had been struck by gunfire. There were no injuries.
Sunday, March 3, 2024:
- 3:08 a.m. Officers responded to the 1000 block of Hunters Street for the report of an occupied home struck by gunfire. They arrived to find multiple shell casings at the scene. No one was injured.
- 5:12 a.m. Officers were called to the 100 block of Sutton Drive for gunshots fired. Officers located multiple shell casings in the road and discovered an occupied home had been struck by several bullets.
- 10:31 a.m. Officers responded to a shots fired call in the 100 block of Forest Skipper Drive and located several shell casings in the street and learned that an occupied home had been struck by the gunfire. No one inside was injured. Following an extensive search, ECPD located and arrested four suspects in connection with this incident. They also seized two 9mm handguns.
“I want to thank our team, the men and women of the Elizabeth City Police Department. These men and women go out every day with the goal of keeping our community safe,” said Chief Webster.
On Tuesday, the police department released its total calls for service for February 2024. ECPD responded to 5,689 calls, averaging almost 100 calls a day.
He also thanked the community for calling and providing information as the eyes and ears on the streets.
