NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two Chesapeake men were each sentenced to seven years in prison for bank fraud, identity theft and armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier.
Court documents show that on Dec. 18, 2022 postal inspectors and the Chesapeake Police Department (CPD) observed as two people got out of the vehicle and used a U.S. Postal arrow key to access the blue mail collection boxes.
The two men grabbed the stolen mail from the collection boxes and then ran back to the vehicle where the driver was waiting. However, law enforcement stopped the vehicle from leaving. At that point, the two individuals, tossed the bag filled with over 250 pieces of mail, and ran away on foot.
Postal inspectors detained the driver 24-year-old Isaiah J. Card and police were able to locate, 22-year-old Dahnico Jharon McCoy, one of the men who ran away.
Officers recovered numerous stolen checks and Western Union Money Orders that from the vehicle. Some of the money orders had been “washed” and made out in McCoy and Card’s names. These forged money orders contained the names and account numbers of various victims who had their mail stolen.
On April 19, 2023, Card and McCoy robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint in Raleigh, North Carolina. The next day the pair stole mail from a number of postal boxes in the Raleigh area.
Card and McCoy were arrested during a traffic stop was conducted on April 27, 2023. Authorities found the stolen arrow key, a handgun and at least 180 stolen checks.
On Feb. 8, 2024, McCoy and Card pled guilty to possession of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Both men were sentenced to seven years in prison.
