18-year-old arrested after fleeing into woods following police chase in Currituck

CURRITUCK, N.C. (WAVY) – An 18-year-old was arrested after hiding in the woods following a police chase on Tuesday.

According to officials, around 1:30 p.m., deputies responded to reports of a stolen vehicle entering Currituck through Dare County.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle on US 158 near the Grandy area and attempted to initiate a stop.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 18-year-old Travoy Rountree, continued along US 158 at a high rate of speed until ending in the 1100 block of Shortcut Road when Rountree lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

Rountree then fled on foot into the nearby woods. Shortly afterwards, Rountree was apprehended by members of the Sheriff’s Office, including the K9 team.

No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident, according to police.

Rountree was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felony flee to elude, four counts of center lane violations, careless and reckless driving and two counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer. Police said drug charges are pending.

Rountree is currently being held at the Currituck Detention Center under a $1 million bond.
