VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The driver of a vehicle that struck a tree and caught fire over the weekend in Virginia Beach, killing the passenger, has been charged with DUI and involuntary manslaughter.
Officers say they responded to the single-vehicle crash on Oceana Boulevard around 3 a.m. Saturday, near the “s” curve” of the road in the 100 block of Oceana.
The driver, 20-year-old Jafet Martinez, lost control of the 2018 BMW 330i while heading north, and both speed and alcohol were factors, police said.
The passenger was 21-year-old Joseph Jaime Adorno IV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martinez’s charged were certified to a grand jury on October 7, 2021.
