HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton mother is demanding answers after she says her daughter’s boyfriend attacked the girl at school on Monday, all caught on school cameras.
Hampton City Schools said it’s working with the Hampton Police Division in regards to the alleged assault, but Xavier Ince tells 10 On Your Side she was never contacted about the incident.
“I send my kids to learn, not to be bullied, not to be beat on, nevertheless by a male,” said Ince. She wants the school to be held accountable too.
Ince said her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend are the students seen in the surveillance video. The footage is hard to watch, but you can see the students talking before the situation got physical.
Hampton Police said the male student assaulted Ince’s daughter, striking her with his fists and feet.
“She was badly bruised. She had knots behind her ears, she had a knot on her eye,” Ince said.
Ince was at work when she got a call about the incident, but not from who she would’ve expected. “The school never called me. The first point of contact came from my senior daughter. That should’ve never happened.”
Ince says she rushed to the school and immediately went to the principal looking for answers. “So I said ‘well where is the boy?’ ‘Well he’s gone.’ So my first reaction is why was he even able to leave the school? They told me that the father had come and picked up the son.”
Ince said she had to go to Hampton Police the next day to file charges herself. She also went to Hampton City Schools.
10 On Your Side reached out to the district too and a spokesperson said via email, since “this is a student matter, the division cannot provide details.”
The spokesperson went on to say “one student is being disciplined in accordance to the Hampton City Schools’ Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.”
“Somebody has to be held accountable. Hampton City Schools failed me,” Ince said.
The school district says it will continue to make safety a top priority for students and staff and it “will determine if the appropriate procedures and protocols were followed.”
The male student has been charged with one count of assault and one count of vandalism, according to police.
