COROLLA, N.C. (WAVY) — A wild horse died after being struck by a car Saturday night in Corolla, authorities said.

According to the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. on June 9. A Virginia Beach resident was driving north when four or five horse ran across the dunes toward the water — one of which made contact with the car.

The sheriff’s office said the driver was reportedly going 20-25 mph at time in foggy conditions, with low visibility.

A Facebook post by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund said the mare was killed instantly after it was hit. The group encouraged everyone to be cautious when driving on the beach roads, particularly at night.

No charges are being filed, according to the sheriff’s office.
