A woman talked about ending her relationship. A month later, she was murdered and her ex charged.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A month before allegedly murdering the mother of his child in a Newport News parking lot, a Hampton man threw a hammer at her after she talked about ending their relationship, according to court documents.

41-year-old Maya Frye was arrested Thursday and charged with the second-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Jocelyn Frazier.

Frye allegedly shot Frazier at point-blank range outside of a small shopping plaza off Jefferson Avenue after the pair got into a fight, witnesses told 10 On Your Side.

But Frazier’s murder isn’t the first time Frye was accused of hurting the 26-year-old woman.

Frye was charged with assaulting Frazier on Feb. 26 after he allegedly threw a hammer at her while she was holding their baby, according to court documents.

Frazier told police the assault happened after Frye got upset with her for talking about “ending the relationship.” She said he pushed her against a wall, grabbed her face and shoulder, and put his forearm under her chin, court documents state.

Frazier pulled a Taser out of her pocket and pushed Frye away, stepping between him and their baby, who was sitting in a high chair on the other side of the room, according to court documents.

She was holding their son when Frye allegedly picked up a hammer off the kitchen table, looked at her and said, “Do it,” then threw the hammer at her. Frye also allegedly picked up a chair and threw it on the floor, breaking it, court documents state.

Frye was charged with domestic assault and battery. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

Frye was charged with second degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in conneciton to Frazier’s murder. He was arraigned in Newport News Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Friday, a court clerk told 10 On Your Side.
