Taking public transit could reduce stress this Harborfest

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Planning to travel to Harborfest this year? You may want to consider your transportation and parking options.

The 48th annual Norfolk Harborfest, the nation’s largest and longest-running free maritime festival, takes place at Town Point Park along the waterfront from noon to 11 p.m. on Friday, June 7, noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, with fireworks at 9:30 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 9.

Hampton Roads Transit

Hampton Roads Transit is encouraging attendees to take transit to and from Downtown Norfolk on June 7-9. The public can utilize the Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry service to transport people. Buying passes ahead of the event can help save time.

“We’re proud of our role to transport people safely and efficiently for the region’s biggest events, including this cherished celebration of our maritime and naval heritage,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s President and CEO. “Harborfest is the perfect time to try transit to avoid the hassles of driving and parking.”

One-day, round-trip tickets are $4 per person and can be purchases on the Ticketleap app or online by clicking here. These daily tickets are good for two, one-way trips on both the light rail and ferry.

For convenient access to the light rail, HRT riders can park for free at any of four Tide park-and-ride lots:

The ferry connects Waterside in Norfolk, where Harborfest is underway, with both North Landing and High Street in Portsmouth. The 45th Annual Seawall Festival is taking place in Portsmouth this weekend.

On Friday, June 7, two additional ferries will be operating, one from 11:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., the other from 3:30 to 10:45 p.m.

On Saturday, up to four ferries will shuttle back and forth during peak times and after fireworks. On Sunday, Hampton Roads Transit said the regular schedule of 10 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. will be supplemented by a second boat operating from 11:40 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and a third boat from noon until 6 p.m. Ending times could vary depending on demand.
